As September Begins...
Tomorrow, September 6, marks the anniversary of the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake, which struck in 2018. This powerful earthquake, centered in eastern Iburi, recorded a maximum seismic intensity of 7, leaving 41 people dead and over 600 injured. It was also notable for causing Japan’s first-ever blackout across the entire Hokkaido region. Widespread landslides and power outages severely affected infrastructure and lives, reminding Japan once again of the critical importance of disaster preparedness. Natural disasters can occur anytime, anywhere. Please make sure your emergency supplies and disaster readiness are always in place.
☆ The End of Summer ☆
Tomorrow, September 1, is known in Japan as Disaster Prevention Day. It was established to commemorate the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and nationwide drills and events are held to raise awareness of disaster preparedness. Many of us may recall participating in these drills at school or work. It is also a day to check emergency kits and review stored supplies, reminding us to never forget past disasters and to strengthen our readiness to protect lives in the future. As natural disasters have become more frequent in recent years, it’s crucial to regularly renew our awareness of disaster prevention. This day offers an opportunity to reflect on our own safety, our families, and our preparedness measures. Revisiting disaster measures that are easy to overlook in daily life, and preparing to respond quickly when something happens, is an invaluable practice. No one knows when a disaster may occur, but through days like this, I hope that more people—including myself—will think seriously about preparedness and take action.
