Tomorrow, September 6, marks the anniversary of the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake, which struck in 2018.
This powerful earthquake, centered in eastern Iburi, recorded a maximum seismic intensity of 7, leaving 41 people dead and over 600 injured.
It was also notable for causing Japan’s first-ever blackout across the entire Hokkaido region.
Widespread landslides and power outages severely affected infrastructure and lives, reminding Japan once again of the critical importance of disaster preparedness.
