Tomorrow, September 1, is known in Japan as Disaster Prevention Day.
It was established to commemorate the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and nationwide drills and events are held to raise awareness of disaster preparedness. Many of us may recall participating in these drills at school or work.
It is also a day to check emergency kits and review stored supplies, reminding us to never forget past disasters and to strengthen our readiness to protect lives in the future.
As natural disasters have become more frequent in recent years, it’s crucial to regularly renew our awareness of disaster prevention. This day offers an opportunity to reflect on our own safety, our families, and our preparedness measures.
Revisiting disaster measures that are easy to overlook in daily life, and preparing to respond quickly when something happens, is an invaluable practice.
No one knows when a disaster may occur, but through days like this, I hope that more people—including myself—will think seriously about preparedness and take action.
